Navajo-Churro Sheep

Navajo-Churro Sheep are currently listed as by the American Livestock Breed Conservancy as Threatened.  This means that there are less than 1,000 in the global population.

This breed was developed from the sheep imported by the Spanish over 400 years ago.  Native Americans acquired the sheep breed through trade in the early seventeen century and became a source of food and wool. In the 1800's and 1900's the United States army tried to subjugate the Navajo people by decimating the flocks in order to 'curb overgrazing'.

The fleece is double coated- with a fine inner wool and a courser, long wool.  The wool is much sought after by weavers and other fiber artists.
